X-Lite was started in 1991 by Rex and Marilyn Trimnell. Their first product was a leading edge 'twin crown' bicycle fork, of which the design rights were sold to Raleigh cycles. X-Lites' first production product was a leading edge lightweight bar end. Rex saw that he could make the worlds lightest bar end by combining his unique eye for design and innovative manufacturing techniques. These early bar ends were an instant success. Production was increased from the Trimnell family garage until they moved into a purpose built unit in 1993. X-Lite went on to become the leading UK manufacturer of lightweight MTB components, many other new products were developed to create a world beating range of innovative designs which were exported around the world. X-Lite were famed for using exotic materials such as titanium, carbon fibre and metal matrix and also won many national and international races with the likes of Barry Clarke and David Baker. In 1994 X-Lite started working closely with Loctite UK to create a range of mountain bike maintenance products. However, when X-Lite came to test the Loctite cleaner they were not happy with the results, so they set about creating their own brand-name and cleaning product which was both safe to use on all parts of a bicycle and the environment - Muc-Off was born! After two years the relationship with Loctite ended as the products were not a sales success (looking back they were simply just ahead of their time), however Muc-Off cleaner was showing signs of success so they kept selling this single product, which, eventually grew into a comprehensive bicycle specific care range.
Sales kept rising and they started to receive more and more consumer feedback from riders who were also using Muc-Off to clean their motorcycles and dirt-bikes with stunning results. In 2001, X-Lite started to market the Muc-Off brand in the motorcycle and dirtbike sectors with great success, they have now created a whole range of premium motorcycle specific products.
Sadly on May 7th 2004 Rex Trimnell passed away unexpectedly, leaving Marilyn, Emma and Alex Trimnell to run the business. Due to the growing success of Muc-Off in all sectors in July 2004 X-Lite acquired and moved to a brand new facility in Poole, Dorset. Later that year X-Lite launched the Muc-Off brand into the UK Caravan and Marine markets.
As the business continued to grow rapidly, in 2006 X-Lite had to acquire and move to an even larger, brand new 12,000 sq. ft facility which now included manufacturing, warehousing, R and D, marketing and design departments. X-Lite also started exporting its Muc-Off products globally to the motorcycle sector.
In 2007 Muc-Off Ltd was formed, and the team will be exhibiting at the Dealer Expo in Indiana USA, Muc-Off's first US Motorcycle show.
