Rally Team Scotland experienced a difficult but promising opening event in its 2010 British Rally Championship campaign.  The Bulldog Rally of North Wales saw its driver John MacCrone put in a sterling performance in his first event with the new team and car, but a troublesome puncture on just the second stage dropped him 12 minutes down the time-sheets and ruined his chances of an impressive finish.

The Bulldog Rally was based in Welshpool and took in some classic Welsh forest stages with some fantastic levels of competition.  Rally Team Scotland faced challenges from 11 other crews in the hotly-fought R2 class and its JP Motorsport prepared Fiesta R2 was also entered in the Fiesta Sport Trophy - a one-make challenge for Ford's small car.

Crews tackled the famous Myherin and Sweet Lamb stages twice and it was the Sweet Lamb test that left a sour taste in MacCrone's mouth. Together with new co-driver Stuart Loudan, MacCrone had started well and was the top Fiesta R2 on the first stage. But when the car fell off the jack while changing a puncture on stage 2, the crew were left literally stranded for over 12 minutes - with no chance of clawing the time back.

But the 20-year-old Scottish hot-shot from Mull set about using the remaining stage mileage to get vital experience and to prove the speed that had seen him top the Motorsport News poll for the top young drivers to watch, from all UK motorsport disciplines, during 2010. This was MacCrone's first rally in a left-hand-drive car and despite having completed only 50 miles testing prior to the start, he started to push with an impressive effect.

On SS5 Big Ray and SS6 Dyfi Main, the crew finished second in the ultra-competitive R2 class, just a handful of seconds behind Finland's Jarkko Nikara. Nikara is one of the brightest young stars in Europe - he represented Finland in the Pirelli Euro Shoot Out last year - and he proved a valuable benchmark for MacCrone's performance.

With a solid run over the final two stages, the Palletforce-backed crew finished seventh in the R2 class and third overall in the Fiesta Sport Trophy. However, the biggest positives from the event were the valuable experience of getting 100 stage miles under his belt and the impressive stage-times that really highlighted MacCrone's talent and ability for the future.

MacCrone said, "It's been a tough event but my first rally in a left-hand drive car on these demanding and high-committment stages, where pace-notes and confidence in the car are crucial, was never going to be easy. Stuart and I have worked well together and this was highlighted in the times we set towards the end of the rally. I've learned a lot this weekend and I'm under no illusions that this year will be all about learning and getting progressively faster."

Rally Team Scotland was founded at the start of this year by Richard Moore and its first event was the culmination of months of hard work and the important backing of its many team partners. Moore commented, “It's fantastic to finally start our first event and I need to thank so many people for their support in helping to get this off the ground. It's a long season ahead and John and Stuart have started off well this weekend. No-one was expecting miracles right from the start, we are all taking a long-term and realistic approach, but John has demonstrated his pace and ability well here. We just need to work now on developing the speed and introducing more consistency."

Rally Team Scotland is the initiative of Moore and aims to identify Scotland’s rally stars of the future and provide them with the financial backing and other expertise necessary to make the step up to competing in the British Rally Championship and beyond. The team will not just supply a top rally car and full service crew, but will also ensure the drivers have a complete training and support programme, providing a stepping stone to the Junior WRC and other international competitions as part of a three-year development plan.

The team's next event is the Pirelli Rally on 23-24 April - the second round of the MSA British Rally Championship based in Carlisle.

We secured our second consecutive points’ finish of 2010 in today’s Australian Grand Prix. Tonio Liuzzi drove the VJM03 home to seventh position overall, bringing his and the team’s season tally to eight points. After a rain shower arrived just minutes before the start of the race, Tonio switched to the intermediate tyre on the grid. As the rain eased and a dry line emerged the Italian made a stop for the option dry tyres on lap nine.

Tonio remained on this set until the end of the race, overtaking the Sauber of Pedro de la Rosa for tenth on lap 20 and then keeping Rubens Barrichello, who was on a newer set of rubber, at bay. When Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber clashed in the closing stages Tonio was promoted to seventh to secure his second points finish of the year.

Adrian Sutil unfortunately did not finish the race as he reported a loss of power from his engine on lap seven. He returned to the pits for the team to attempt repairs however when a quick fix could not be made he retired on lap nine.

We seemed to have a problem with the engine very early on in the race. I was driving on just four cylinders and then lost the power and that was it really. It was a shame as we were looking good after the start. The team looked to try and get me out again after I came into the garage as we were in such a good position and I was the quickest car on the circuit at one stage. We missed out on a big chance here today but what can you do. It’s good news for the team that Tonio got some more points and I’ll be looking to bring my points on board at the next race.

Another great race and another great result for the team. It’s a confirmation of the pace we showed in Bahrain and the work the team did over the winter. We worked hard all weekend for this seventh place and it’s a brilliant result at the end of what was a crazy race. At the beginning of the race on the intermediate tyres we were struggling a little and lost a few positions but after I pitted for the dry tyres I was able to recover and stay on the race pace. Towards the end of the race the rear tyres were going off a lot as I had been on them for a long time, but it was just enough to hold onto the position. I think it was another perfect weekend and now we can look forward to Malaysia.

We opened our points account at the first race of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, the Bahrain Grand Prix. Tonio Liuzzi drove a faultless race, matching the pace of the Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes cars, to secure ninth position. With the implementation of a new points system this year, Tonio has chalked up two points - marking his first points since the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix and Force India’s first points since the 2009 Italian Grand Prix.

Adrian Sutil was unfortunate to finish out of the points in 12th position. The German spun on the first lap when a cloud of smoke from the back of Mark Webber’s car completely blocked his vision and he made light contact with Robert Kubica. The incident was enough for him to spin to the rear of the field, but he pushed hard to make up several places and was closing on the top ten in the latter stages. He did have some consolation of posting the second quickest lap of the race.

At least we finished. After the incident in the first corner it was the maximum we could do. We had a good race in the end, learning a lot about the tyres and how the car behaves at the end of a race, but the incident pretty much destroyed my hopes of getting any points. I don’t really know what happened in that corner - I was driving and then there was a big cloud of smoke so I was blind going into it. I touched someone and spun and that was it. It’s a shame but we will keep pushing for the next race.

I’m really pleased. We achieved our target and scored some points, which is a great result for myself and for the team. It was a difficult race as with this amount of fuel and the tyres, plus the heat, we had a bit to control but overall I think we can be pretty happy about how we handled it and to be in the points is magic. All the top teams finished ahead of us and there were no failures or reliability issues so it was the maximum we could have achieved. I’m now looking forward to Australia where we will get some more updates and it could put us in an even better position for the next race. Overall a great result for the team.
