Fort William Is Ready To Welcome The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships

[Posted 03.09.07]

More than 700 athletes from 49 countries will storm Fort William for the 18th UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.

Although it is the first time that Britain hosts the World Championships, the little town of Fort William, nestled in the Scottish Highlands, is no stranger to high-level competitions. Several exciting UCI World Cup events have already taken place there.

The 2007 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships have attracted entries from 49 countries – 11 more than in Rotorua, New Zealand, last year and equaling the record participation of countries in Lugano, Switzerland in 2003. Of note is the first-time participation of Rwanda.

Nineteen world champions will be decided during the week of cross country, downhill and 4X competitions that kicks off today.

Fort William is ready, with two grandstands seating more than 1500 spectators, live television coverage on a big screen at the finish area, and a week of music and entertainment to accompany the competitions.
