Saturday, yes Saturday the 15th of September will see three riders crowned as national champions, as the fabulous circuit at Howton Court, Pontrilias, Herefordshire plays host to the final round of the 2007 Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship. The MX1, MX2 and the newly introduced MXY2 titles remain there for the taking and are sure to be hotly contested as the series reaches its dramatic climax.
Mike Brown - CAS Honda in the MX2 class enjoys the most comfortable lead
at a mere twelve points over recent Grand Prix winner, and pre season favourite
Tommy Searle - KTM UK. However with sixty points still up for grabs, Brown
will know that the chase for the crown is anything but over, especially given
Searle's recent form on the World stage.
Early championship leader Gareth Swanepoel - Molson Kawasaki, reigning
British MX2 champion Carl Nunn - Dixon Yamaha, plus the likes of Tom Church
- Molson Kawasaki and Jason Dougan - Forkrent Suzuki will no doubt play their
part on the day, as they all look to round out 2007 with a good showing.
The MX1 title is destined to go down to the wire with 2006 MX1 champion Ken De Dycker - CAS Honda looking to use every inch of his tall and lean body to retain his crown during a year that has seen the Belgian rider produce some very inconsistent performances. Billy MacKenzie - De Groot Kawasaki currently holds a slim eight point advantage over De Dycker in perhaps his last green UK ride before the Scot joins the CAS team for next season. Ken will move to the factory Suzuki squad for 2008.
Behind the leading duo, Brad Anderson - Pioneer Yamaha and James Noble - Multitek Honda are locked in their own personal battle for third spot in the series. The hard charging Northern double act have been part of some of the best on track fights throughout the campaign and find themselves separated by just a single point after a seven round tour that has taken them the full length and breadth of the British Isles.
It is a similar story in the fiercely contested MXY2 category, with Lewis King - Team Green Kawasaki having moved to the head of the championship table following his victory at the previous round held at Brampton. King is only two points in front of Graeme Irwin - KTM with two very important motos to come, on a track that has a history of creating some very close racing and that offers excellent all round viewing.
Howton Court is no stranger to hosting premier league meetings and has been a regular stop on the Maxxis tour for a number of years now. Sitting on the hillside facing Golden Valley, the mostly natural, grassland circuit has benefited from the addition of various spectacular tabletops, jumps plus a rhythm section. The uphill start and hard packed surface are other elements that are guaranteed to produce an action packed finale to the 2007 domestic season.
Howton is situated on the A465 Abergavenny to Hereford road between the villages of Pontrilas and Wormbridge. The final round of the 2007 Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship has a packed schedule in store that will run from 9am right through to 5.30pm, which includes two MXY2 races to add to the normal four motos of championship action.
